]]>Sturgeon Bay Open - 9th placehttp://www.gussyoutdoors.com/whats-going-on/2012/5/22/sturgeon-bay-open-9th-place.html[Your Name Here]2012-05-22T14:34:49Z2012-05-22T14:34:49ZDave Bennett and I just returned home from Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.  We fished the annual Sturgeon Bay Open Bass Tournament (www.sbobt.org) last week on Lake Michigan and came home with a solid 9th place finish.  We brought in 25.74 pounds on day one to sit in 67th place, then followed up with 31.05 pounds on day two.  We had our best week of practice ever in seven years of fishing this event.  All I can say it what a great fishery.  

 

My largest fish on the week - a 6.54 pound giant that I caught on a tube in 2 feet of water.

I had to show off my favourite new fishing rod and reel combo - A Shimano Sustain spinning reel, 6'10" G. Loomis NRX rod and some 8 lb. Power Pro braid.  This is the DREAM combo for fishing with light, finesse baits for smallmouths.  I couldn't put it down!

Not only are the big bass plentiful at Green Bay, there is no shortage of BIG walleyes as well.  We caught a bunch of nice ones over the course of the week, including some 30" fish.  

The LakeMaster card for Lake Michigan was a huge advantage for finding those small "stick-outs" and spines along the shoreline that were holding fish.  We have never had this card before and it definitely helped us find new spots.  The LakeMaster Michigan chip.

]]>Great shed hunting seasonhttp://www.gussyoutdoors.com/whats-going-on/2012/5/10/great-shed-hunting-season.html[Your Name Here]2012-05-10T11:08:34Z2012-05-10T11:08:34ZI'm definitely into fishing mode now but it was a pretty good shed hunting season.  The last weekend that we went some of my friends from Minnesota came up and we had a few good days, including a haul of 125 sheds between 6 of us.  Another day, 6 of us found 25, including Pat McSharry's whooping 85+ inch giant!   

This is one of the BIGGEST sheds I have ever seen from the Sunset Country Region!

]]>Rainy River walleyeshttp://www.gussyoutdoors.com/whats-going-on/2012/4/18/rainy-river-walleyes.html[Your Name Here]2012-04-18T11:45:57Z2012-04-18T11:45:57ZLast week my Dad and I had one of the best days of fishing either of us has ever had when we hit the Rainy River to film a segment for season two of Fishing with Gussy.  We pulled up to our spot, put the Talon down on a sandbar and did not move the boat until we went home!  In all, we lost count of how many fish we caught, but the number was high.  The most incredible thing is that most of these fish were in the 24-27 inch range.

I got a nice fish on a Northland Rattlin' Fireball Jig, also tipped with a shiner.  While we could have caught fish on Impulse and Trigger X soft plastic minnows, sometimes its fun to use the real thing!  Throughout the rest of the season I will use plastic more than I will use bait and I'll catch plenty of fish.  

This was the biggest fish of the day - a 30" plus fish that was likely in the 10 pound range.  

If you are going to fish the Rainy River, you need to get one of the LakeMaster "WOODS/RAINY" chips.  Not only do you have high detail mapping of Rainy Lake and the lower half of Lake of the Woods, you get all of the Rainy River in great detail, to reveal navigational hazards and good fishing spots.  

]]>End of one season, start of another...http://www.gussyoutdoors.com/whats-going-on/2012/3/26/end-of-one-season-start-of-another.html[Your Name Here]2012-03-26T16:07:42Z2012-03-26T16:07:42ZIce fishing across Sunset Country came to an abrupt end this past week as super warm temperatures melted the ice two or three weeks earlier than normal.  We're looking at complete ice out across the region by the first weekend in April, earlier on many waters.  It's crazy!  

I'm not complaining...it's nice to get back in the boat!  Over the past week my friends and I caught some big fish on the ice and even managed to get on the Rainy River for a day of walleye fishing in the boat.

I had my friends from KrugerFarms.com up for a few days of fishing...fellow pro-staffers Dusty Minke (FLW Tour walleye pro) and Troy Jutting (head coach of the University of Minnesota-Mankato men's hockey team) catch and release a nice walleye.

]]>Back in Canadahttp://www.gussyoutdoors.com/whats-going-on/2012/3/8/back-in-canada.html[Your Name Here]2012-03-08T22:27:57Z2012-03-08T22:27:57ZNow that I'm back home at Lake of the Woods it's time to get back on the ice!  I have not been fishing a whole lot the past couple of weeks but I will be on the ice just about every day until we can't get out there any more!  The weather looks great for next couple of weeks so we'll probably be looking at an early ice-out which is fine with me.  I love ice fishing and I'm going to have some fun over the next few weeks but I absolutely can't wait to get back in the Lund!
